A village with medieval origins

From the 11th century onwards, the lands of La Forêt-Auvray belonged to the the Vassy family, an ancient line of the Norman barony, documented in the regional archives. Their long-standing presence shaped the region and influenced the organisation of the land right up until the end of the Ancien Régime. Even today, the village is renowned for its genuine charm, its ancient alleyways and its stunning views over the Orne Valley. From your accommodation, you have direct access to these viewpoints and the walking trails, including the route of the GR 36 which runs through Suisse Normande.

The Château de La Forêt-Auvray, a fortress remodelled during the Renaissance

The castle is the iconic feature of the local heritage. Originally a 14th-century medieval stronghold, it was subsequently adapted in the 16th century against a backdrop of religious tensions, before being remodelled in the 17th century in a style influenced by the Norman Renaissance. Its quadrilateral layout, its four corner towers, its walls with parapets and its fortified enclosure bear witness to a key defensive role. Although some parts are now partly in ruins, the site retains a an impressive atmosphere, enhanced by the presence of the moat and numerous architectural features listed under the historic monuments.

The castle’s postern gate, attributed to the master mason François Gabriel, is notable for its the richness of its sets and by the quality of its fittings. The variety of materials, the bossage, the composition of the arch and the distinctive pediment subtly illustrate the architectural styles of the late Renaissance in Normandy. These defensive features serve as a reminder that the castle once stood on a key strategic location in the region.
